President of the Partnership, Sir Crispin Tickell, GCMG KCVO
"The scientific case for tackling climate change is beyond doubt. If we are to adapt to the unavoidable impacts over the next few decades and also avoid more severe impacts further ahead, we must all learn to think and behave differently. We need closer partnerships at all levels of government, business, universities, NGOs and local communities - and to establish new guidelines and codes of conduct. The South East Climate Change Partnership - working with similar initiatives across Britain and other regions of Europe - is helping to raise the capacity of the South East to respond."
Patron of the Partnership, John Craven OBE:
"Combating the future effects of climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the world today, especially in low-lying densely-populated areas such as the South East of England. We must be prepared.
Organisations and individuals must work together to understand the challenges and plan how we respond to them. The South East Climate Change Partnership has a vital role to play."

Our Climate is Changing...
Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have compounded natural climate change by increasing carbon concentrations in the atmosphere. This legacy of emissions has produced an unprecedented rise in global average temperature over the past 100 years, with even greater and faster climate change predicted this century. There is now a strong scientific consensus and our understanding of the causes and risks of climate change is improving all the time.

Rising to the Challenge
There is also increasing recognition of climate change by political, business & NGO leaders. Urgent action is needed on twin challenges: mitigation to reduce emissions and so help avoid more dangerous changes in the future; and adaptation to help us to prepare for unavoidable impacts that are already stored up in the climate system.
The South East Climate Change Partnership was created by public, private and voluntary sector organisations. We investigate, advise and inform on the impacts of climate change for our region's economic, social and environmental well-being. The costs of not acting on climate change - or delaying our efforts - would far exceed the costs of the actions needed to mitigate and adapt. But these complex challenges mean that we need to work together. The Partnership works with organisations within the region, as well as with other parts of the UK and the EU.

| "[Global warming] does change the way we've thought about things in the past. Clearly there's little point thinking in terms of protecting small chunks of habitat when the climate is changing. We now need to be anticipating change - and trying to adapt to it." |
