ICE assesses SE Infrastructure
The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has issued its ”State of the Nation: Infrastructure 2010” report, along with a special briefing about the state of infrastructure in South East England.
From the ICE press release:
“The report and South East England briefing was compiled by panels drawn from the various fields of expertise across ICE’s membership and it presents an authoritative commentary and grading of the nation’s and the region’s infrastructure.
The limitations of infrastructure in South East England are, perhaps, most visible to the public on our road and rail networks – and when floods cause severe damage to homes and businesses. However, we also face major challenges for our future water supplies and in dealing with waste. While not so immediately visible to the public, they are just as vital to our way of life, and need proper attention.
ICE is pleased to see that last week’s budget has taken heed of past mistakes recognising the consequences of slashing infrastructure spending. The news that the strategic body, Infrastructure UK, will remain in place is welcome as is the renewed commitment to the creation of a Green Investment Bank.
However, business, planning and financial institutions face a period of rapid change and uncertainty, and therefore much detailed work needs to be done to make sure our national and local infrastructure needs are not lost along the way. I commend the State of the Nation: Infrastructure 2010 report to you as an introduction to the particular issues we face in the region.”
